Ignitions begin at Magic Feather Prescribed Burn

July 24, 2023

FORT COLLINS, CO (July 24, 2023) – After closely monitoring conditions, firefighters conducted a test fire in the Magic Feather Prescribed Burn area this morning and determined that conditions are clear to allow the prescribed burn to begin as planned. Smoke may be visible in the area, including along County Road 74E (Red Feather Lakes Road).

The prescribed burn is in the vicinity of Red Feather Lakes, Colorado. Closures are in place covering Mount Margaret, Lady Moon, Granite Ridge, and Molly Moon trails as well as the surrounding area specified in the closure order.

People in the area should expect to see smoke when operations are taking place. Smoke may also impact those using the Dowdy Lake Campgrounds and Day-Use Area.

Burning of the Magic Feather Prescribed Burn has been taking place over recent years as conditions have allowed. In May 2023, 200 acres were successfully burned, all north of County Road 74E.

This prescribed burn is part of the overall strategy on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests to address the Wildfire Crisis. Prescribed fire is one of the most efficient ways of reducing wildfire risk. Regularly conducting prescribed fires, which mimic nature, reduces the buildup of flammable vegetation and overgrowth.
