Magic Feather Prescribed Burn

Project Goals:

The Canyon Lakes Ranger District of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, in cooperation with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and Coalition for the Poudre River Watershed (CPRW), is proposing to broadcast burn on both National Forest System (NFS) lands and non-NFS lands. The Magic Feather Collaborative Project area is generally located east of Red Feather Lakes, Colorado and the project area generally consists of ponderosa pine, aspen, riparian areas, and mixed conifer stands. The goal of this project is to restore the ponderosa pine and mixed conifer stands to a more natural state, including reducing surface and crown fuel loading across the landscape, retaining and encouraging old-growth qualities, and improving wildlife habitat.

Project Status:

To date, 1,491 acres have been burned within this project. Burning last occurred the week of October 9, 2023. Burning could happen throughout the coming months as conditions allow.

The amount treated per year is dependent on weather, ground conditions, and available
resources. Numerous cooperators, including local fire departments, will help implement this burn.
