Fire is Essential in Western Forests
Fire is an essential part of healthy forests, playing an integral role in many ecosystems. But, for over a century, we have excluded fire from our forests, leaving behind a legacy of overly dense forests that help fuel high-intensity wildfires that damage communities and the water supply. Fireshed partners work strategically across land ownerships to increase the scale and pace of forest restorationby bringing fire back into our watershed management toolbox.

What is a Fireshed?
An area where social and ecological concerns regarding wildfire overlap and are intertwined.
Wildfire moves across the land based on fuels, wind, and terrain and often moves in and out of drainages and watersheds. Wildfire operates at a large scale that connects the high country with downstream communities and resources. Because of these aspects, and in order to take steps to be adapted to wildfire, we need to think and act at a wildfire-size scale.
The Northern Colorado Fireshed spans the Colorado Front Range from the Wyoming border through Clear Creek County.
Fire Lives Here
Fire is a natural and important force here in Colorado. In the new film “Fire Lives Here,” we explore the relationship between people, forest, and fire. Filmed over two years across Colorado’s Front Range, the filmshowcases the year-round efforts of partnerships like ours working together to change wildfire outcomes.
